Phil Jackson led the Lakers to three straight championships and four NBA Finals appearances in five years during his first stint in Los Angeles. This time around, he's just hoping to get them into the playoffs. Jackson begins his second tour as Los Angeles' coach when the Lakers face Denver in the Nuggets' home opener.:) Jackson was originally hired by the Lakers in 1999 and guided the team through its three-year championship run. However, Los Angeles was eliminated by San Antonio in the 2003 conference semifinals, and Jackson left after the team lost to Detroit in the 2004 Finals. The 60-year-old Jackson signed a three-year contract worth around $30 million in the offseason to come back, but won't have nearly the same talent as he had in his last season with the Lakers. Kobe Bryant remains, but Shaquille O'Neal has been replaced by Chris Mihm, Karl Malone by Kwame Brown and Gary Payton by Smush Parker. "We open up in Denver, and we've got a ways to go to figure out how to compete against teams at that level," Jackson said. "I'm trying to limit what I think this team's goals should be. I've said the playoffs. That's a pretty high goal in itself, but there's no number attached to that. "We're looking to reach the playoffs and be a competitive team in this conference again." Bryant, who ranked second in the league with 27.6 points per game last season, will again be the team leader. He and Jackson have had well-chronicled differences in the past, but the two seem to be on the same page heading into this season. "We have an incredible coaching staff, and they prepare us extremely well," Bryant said. "It's on us to execute, no more and no less. If we can do that, we'll be fine." Reaching the playoffs could be difficult in a loaded Western Conference. Last season, seven teams in the West won 49 or more games. The Lakers won 34 and failed to make the playoffs for the second time since 1976. Jackson will again employ the triangle offense that he used in his first stint with the Lakers, and while helping Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls to six titles in the 1990s. He'll also try to improve last season's disappointing defense. "This team's going to have to be dependent on Kobe's scoring ability to start," Jackson said. "They're going to have to find another secondary scorer that they can depend on. I'm going to try to nursemaid this team through some of that until we really can build a format we can work with. "They're going to have to find a way to bring the chemistry to the floor as they go through this early portion of the season." Bryant is opening the season in what has been a hostile environment for him since he was accused of sexually assaulting an employee of a Vail, Colo. resort in June 2003. The criminal case against him was dismissed last September and the civil case was dropped in March. The Nuggets lost their season opener Tuesday, falling 102-91 to the defending champion San Antonio Spurs. Carmelo Anthony led Denver with 23 points, while Kenyon Martin had 19, Eduardo Najera scored 14 and Earl Boykins 13. "I thought we played well but it really comes down to making plays late in the game," said Martin. "They did it, we didn't." George Karl served the first of his two-game suspension for making improper contact with a prospect over the summer. Assistant coach Scott Brooks took Karl's place on the Denver bench and will also fill in against the Lakers. Key reserve Nene left in the first quarter with what the team described as a sprained right anterior cruciate ligament. He did not return, and was scheduled to be examined by a team doctor Wednesday.
