LOS ANGELES -- Orel Hershiser said his Tuesday night interview with Dodgers owner Frank McCourt "went very well," but he flew home without knowing when the club would name a new manager.
A club spokesman said general manager Paul DePodesta's short list of six candidates had not been narrowed down to finalists and second interviews had not been scheduled.
In addition to the Hershiser interview, DePodesta has spent this week overseeing the annual organization meetings. The next key event on the calendar is the annual general manager meetings, which start Nov. 7.
Hershiser, the Texas Rangers pitching coach the past 3 1/2 seasons, was the sixth candidate interviewed by the Dodgers. A possible seventh candidate, former Dodger Bobby Valentine, managed the Chiba Lotte Marines to a Japan World Series victory this week. DePodesta has not said that Valentine would be interviewed, but the two have talked by phone.
McCourt is expected to take a more active role in any further interviews. This will be the first managerial hire of the McCourt era, which began almost two years ago.
The Dodgers have been without a manager since parting ways with Jim Tracy on Oct. 3. The only other club currently without a manager is Tampa Bay.
Prior to speaking with Hershiser, the Dodgers interviewed farm director Terry Collins, Triple-A manager Jerry Royster, former Detroit manager Alan Trammell, San Francisco bench coach Ron Wotus and Cleveland Minor League manager Torey Lovullo. Trammell also interviewed for the Tampa Bay job.
I think the Dodgers will get him
