Here's something to consider, perhaps no more than a hunch. But I'm going to say that Al is thinking "good riddance" — and for the following reason.

If the kid didn't like what was presented to him in his two, three, or however many interviews he went through, then the logical conclusion is this:

Kid's not tough enough for the job.
