Thanks for the scores, Jimi, I was looking for them all over the place. I really was expecting England to blow Paraguay out of the water, so that score was surprising when I saw it yesterday. As for Trinidad, it was great seeing them tie. They're fighting contenders, that's for sure! :)

South Korea - after giving up the first goal to Togo came back to score two in the second half to win 2-1.

Togo player Abalo got red carded in the 53rd minute and South Korea capitalized immediately scoring in the 54th minute (Lee) from a set piece and then adding the winner in the 72nd minute(Ahn).

Germany 1 - Poland 0

Germany appeared to be happy with a tie - then in injury time they hit the post like three times and finally scored

Neuville subbed in at the 71st minute scored in the 90th minute. They now will ease into the next round and will surely win their group.

II wish I could sit in front of the TV with a beer at 655am and watch the games but, I still have to work. I have a TV in my office so - I can watch games at I work. Unfortunately my busiest time of the year is right now.

Today I watched then end of the first half of the Mexico/Angola game(SLEEPER) with the Fed ex guy. Mexico 0 – Angola - 0

This cup has had the most lopsided matches in the first round. Not to many top notch games so far.

The next round will be great - possibly England/Germany - Mexico/Argentina
Italy/Brazil or France/Spain

kinda like Basket ball is to me... playing soccer is much more fun, but it is non stop for 45 mins.Oh yeah, I wouldn't call playing soccer a sleeper. In fact, I know it's fun. But watching it, ... good night ... . Same with baseball to me, I love to play it but, watching it isn't at the top of my list.

Basketball, at least there's some movement. But really, you only need to check into the game at the 5 minute mark. If the difference is less than 10 points, there's a chance for a hot finish. If it's more than 10 pts, chances are the team with the lead will win so, you didn't miss anything.

I bet if the US was more competitive, then I'd be more interested.

Same general issue you have with all sports - officiating. I agree, a late tackle isn't a red card offense unless you do 5 in a row. The intentional elbow to the face that draws blood? Yes, that's a red card.

But, the United States isn't too popular at the moment so, I don't expect we'll get too many calls in this World Cup.

There's a kid from Hawaii on team USA - Brain Ching. He appeared to be the last man selected before the cut. He doesn't play much but, I would like to see him in there. He has a goal in pre-Cup.

After reading up on it, and reflecting on the game, the goalie Keller did a good job. Until it was described back to me, I didn't realize he had stopped two threats on goal.

By virtue of a soft group the Swiss will advance but will be eliminated in the next round in game 1

Ukraine 4 - Saudi Arabia Donut

Entertaining game - Shevchenko final got a score. Look for him to light it up if the Ukraines hang around. If the Ukraines advance they will be the first team to lose by 4 goals in their first game and still advance.

Spain was down for a lot of the game - scored in the 71st minute and then again just a few minutes later. The Spaniards added one more in the 90th minute to assure they will be onto the next round. They look at times like one of the top 3 or 4 teams in this Cup.

Mexico are down to ten men after Luis Perez receives a harsh yellow card for diving - his second of the match

From BBC Trivia -
The red card by Luis Perez was Mexico's sixth in World Cup history and meant that the Central American nation have now had at least one player sent off in their last four World Cup participations. The only other nation to have had dismissals in four successive World Cups is Cameroon (1990-2002).

Portugal and Mexico will advance from group D

Iran 1 - Angola 1

Angola could have made the next round had they held onto their 1 gooal lead. Iran evened it up in the 72nd minute. For about 15 minutes Angola appeared to be moving on and team Mexico going home.

US comes out flat and loses to Ghana 2-1
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41798000/jpg/_41798970_usa416.jpg

Claudio Reyna made a very bad decision and the penalty kick given to Ghana was absolute crap. IMO it changes the whole build up of the game but that is how it goes. The US came out completely flat the whole cup. They are a much better team then how they played but results are what gage a good team and the US did not get results. One goal in the entire cup and it was by the man - Dempsey.
As a team the US played very poor - No Landon, No Beasley, no Reyna - the list can go on

Italia 2 - Czechs 0
Italy did everything to help the US but, we could not help ourselves.

The best I can tell, US player Brian Ching from Hawaii and my high school didn't play a single minute. Maybe someone knows but, I don't think he played in any game. I know he scored 1 goal, maybe 2 goals in the exhibition games. And considering how far and in between US had goals, I think there's something going on here.

Some of the media is picking up on it too, the coache's lack of substitutions, specifically, in that Italy game when we lost 2 players on the red cards. There were little, if any substitutions after that, leaving the guys on the field seriously winded, already being down 2 on the field, and 1 to the opposition. US played that game mostly a man down and still managed a tie. I wonder what may have happened if the coach had put some fresh legs in there?

Otherwise - Are you ready for some football?

CORaiderFan
06-22-2006, 03:37 PM
You are correct Ching did not play. I have seen him play live a few times for the San Jose Quake - he is with the same team they just moved to Houston.

This is the flattest I have seen the US team play. Take it for what it is worth -no one expected them to come out of this group. IMO the hardest group - made the US look amateurs at times but, they showed some live at times vs. Italy and Ghana. I can not believe they would not come out with some fire.

Everyone will point to Bruce as the cause for their failure - IMO the players that showed up in 2002 disappeared in 2006. Landon who has been a great player maker was invisible. Beasley had one great pass (today's assist) Claudio had a horrendous cup, Oneywu who was forecasted to have a break out cup looked lost as well did Pope. Overall they where chumped by a #5 ranking going into the cup. US soccer will pay for some years on the outcome of this cup.

Looked like Argentina was going to run away with a 1-0 game but Germany and leading goal scorer Klose had different thoughts. Klose tied it in the 80th minute to send it into over time and then penalty kicks. The German goalie stole the show with two stops.
