I think the US team hopes all center around the Italians. The Czech team IMO is probably in the top 2 or 3 in the CUP. For the US to advance with the Czechs they need to beat or tie the Italians and then beat Ghana. I think 4 points out of their group would give them a decent chance to advance.

Here is my picks on who will make it out of the first round

Group A- Poland – Germany
B- England – Sweden
C- Argentina – Holland
D- Portugal – Mexico
E- USA – Czech
F- Brazil – Croatia
G- France – Korea
H- Spain – Ukraine

You take no risk at saying US is overrated. FIFA ranks teams by whom they beat and who they play. The US beats EVERY team they are supposed and that is why they get the high ranking. I agree that there is no way US is number 5 in the world but, NO team will take the US lightly.

Kasey Keller is world class and can be judged on the level of any world cup soccer goalie. He alone can keep us in games. What happened in 2002 was not an accident or by luck. The US actually outplayed the Germans but, lost. Fact of the matter is the US is not that far behind the better soccer countries in the world.

Wow - England. Every cup they are expected to do good and every cup they find a way to get knocked out and early at that.

I hear you - England SHOULD do some damage. It seems like England and the Italians are expected to go far every cup and they find a way to implode by a red card, a missed opportunity/goal or something.

Rooney practice today and it looks like he is expected to play in the fist round of qualifying, maybe in the opener vs. Paraguay. He is an incredible talent. If Owens and Rooney get healthy England should be in good shape. England has a pretty easy group - so maybe they can ease him back into play and save him for the next rounds.

You Canadian, ey?

I have always been a fan of Claudio Reyna. I used to go watch the San Jose MLS team when Donovan was there and he was great to watch

I am really on the Clint Dempsey band wagon. This guy’s style of play is like controlled chaos. If he gets some playing time he will surely make a name for himself in the world of Futbol.

IMO the US players that are going to have a breakout Cup –
Eddie Johnson, Clint Dempsey and Onyewu

Heck ya I'm watching!

I was surprised by Germany. They looked crisp, fast and even athletic. Something I'm not used to seeing from the German squad. The knock on them was offense, but I saw plenty in their first match.....

The High Flyin' Dutch were amazing! Granted they didn't play the best team, but it's still the World Cup and they dominated time of posession with around 70 minutes of posession!

Argentina looked good to me, but not dominating....

England is a good team, but seemingly overrated still. Bechham played lights out, Rooney was obviously injured and sat out, but the Brits should've played better IMO...

Poland got beat down by Ecuador....

Sweden ran into one of the best games by a goalie thus far in the Cup. They played to a draw, but the Swedes were the better team and needed to pull out a win, but the goalie for Tinidad & Tobago was excellent....

did anyone see the spain vs ukraine game today, the referee was shocking!!!! the red card he gave was an unbelivebly bad decision

That red card was absolute crap!

It should not have even been a foul let alone a red card/penalty shot. It was a Swiss ref that made the call from midfield about 30-40 yards behind the play. That gets my vote for worse call of the cup - so far.

Spain was already up 2-0 so, it does not appear that it effect the outcome.

I was hoping to see the Ukraine striker Shevchenko rip it up. He is coming off injury and was questionable for the start. Spain looks to be one of the top teams in the Cup with the Czechs, Brazilians and Argentines.

Shevchenko was in the top 3 running for FIFA player of the year

My top ten from week one.

Spain – Played as good as the top teams and converted muchos goals.
Argentina – Next to Spain – played the best 1st game
Czechs – Look to be a contender
Brazil – expected more out of the powerhouse but, still Brazil
England – Not playing up to their power – great defense
Germans – with who they have played – nothing suprising.
The Dutch – look really good. Should go far in the tournament.
Ecuador – Biggest surprise of WC2006
Portugal – look good after one match
Italy – don’t expect to see them flash until they play the Czechs. Will be very defensive vs. US

the czech's are an average team at best who just happen to have some exceptional players, nedved, cech and possibly rosicky. They will qualify but they are not a match for the bigger sides, they are 9th favourite to win the cup and they dont have any depth to their squad

This is the same Czech team that beat Germany and Holland in Euro2004 on it's way to the semis. This team is built to win now. They could easily draw Australia (and dodge Brazil!) in the next round and be in the field of 8 with not much of a struggle.

I do not agree with average - but we can wait and see. The way Argentina and Spain are playing - any team in the cup can look average.

Tomorrow’s Games -

Germany v Argentina 900AM ESPN

Italy v Ukraine 100PM ESPN2

Ukraine should not even be in the mix. I think Argentina is playing better but it is in Germany and they have been playing great.

I’ll say Argentina and Italy

Saturday we have -

England v Portugal 900AM ABC

Brazil v France 100PM ESPN

These are some tough games. I would have never expected France to make it this far. The are playing with a fire in their arse and could possible give Brazil a run for it but, in the end - Brazil

England vs. Portugal

England IMO has played flat all cup. Will this be their break out game our with Figo stick it to the English?

I'll say Portugal & Brazil
