Berkeley, CA - Former Berkeley High School student and current Cincinnati Bengal Hannibal Navies hosted his ‘Third Annual Camp in the Bay’ free football and life skills clinic for 150 youths ages 14-18 at Berkeley High School. Kids hailed in from Berkeley, nearby Oakland, and San Francisco schools. Children enjoyed a full day of NFL Combine-like workouts such as the 40-yard dash, offensive/defensive agility drills, quarterbacking skills assisted by the Oakland Raiders own Marques Tuiasosopo, and getting measured for vertical leaping.
Also, two student athletes, Erick Sanchez and Mareesha Valentine, each received a $2,500 scholarship courtesy of the Hannibal Navies Scholarship Fund. The scholarships are funded by the Hannibal Navies Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) organization dedicated to preparing inner city students for post secondary success http://www.hannibalnavies.org/index.html.
An eight-year NFL veteran and graduate of Berkeley High School, Navies founded the Hannibal Navies Foundation to help open the doors to post secondary education for high school youth and to show young people how to get involved in their communities. The 501 (c) (3) foundation develops and implements programs that foster positive social and academic development to enhance the lives of today’s youth. It provides student-athletes with the tools they need to compete, both on the filed and in the classroom.*
The day concluded with spirited drills pitting offensive receivers against defensive backs followed by powerful words of encouragement and the hard reality and consequences of not having a solid education by the NFL player/coaches. Each speaker had every student athlete's undivided attention as they hung on every word each speaker had to say, which is really remarkable given the rambunctious nature of young adolescent males. Perhaps it was the combination of honest and heart felt words of wisdom by the players and the fact that each kid eagerly endured a nearly non-stop NFL minicamp-like and NFL Combine-like drills from 9:00am to 5:00pm with a small lunch break at around noon. A regimen usually seen at the NFL level.
Players whom donated their time and/or money for this annual event included Oakland Raiders Marques Tuiososopo, Cincinnati Bengals’ Hannibal Navies, Nick Luchey, Marcus Wilkins, and Rashad Bauman, Jacksonville Jaguars Quinn Gray, Arizona Cardinals Charles Lee and J.R. Redmond, and Philadelphia Eagles’ Donald Strickland.
