Penguins right winger Ziggy Palffy has retired, the team announced today.
The Penguins did not specify why Palffy retired, but he told the Slovak paper Sport that he had a lingering shoulder injury.
Palffy was injured in January 2004 when he was playing for the Los Angeles Kings. He has since had two surgeries on the shoulder.
Palffy, 33, signed with the Penguins as a free agent last summer for $13.5 million over three years. His salary was $3.5 million this year, $5.5 million next season and $4.5 million in the third year.
Palffy had 11 goals and 31 assists with the Penguins this season. In 12 NHL seasons, he scored 713 points. Before joining the Penguins, he played for the New York Islanders and Los Angeles Kings.
