I view the poker like I view the other board and card type games.
It falls under a competition heading. Similar to sports in many ways, but lacks the physical aspect and the raw skills that sports have.
That being said, like many "male" interests, it finds its way to the sports venues because of its competittive nature and "risk taking" aspects that seem to appeal to the male gender.
Now, I am an avid poker player, but that is just because, at 40 and overweight, I cannot walk on with a sports franchise, but I can sit down with very good poker players and hold my own.

I never wear them for a home game, but in tourney play, I admit that I wear them, but only intermittedly.
I think they are now a fashion statement more than a deterent.
The masks and stuff need to go, in my opinion. but I dont play enough to really get into all of that.
I have 4 pair of sunglasses, but my wrap arounds are almost entirely for tourney play

Actually I guess it could be a sport its competitive and does take a little bit of stamina to maintain long hours of play. Though I feel a true sport is more physical then mental.

As more than a casual player, I will say that it is a competittion but would not define it as a sport in a traditional way.
So, if you play, whats the style...aggressive, passive, are you a pot calculator or a math wiz?

Its not a sport kind of like how most of the winter games were not sports... a sport is something that has a set way to win.. via ball goes in hoop.. puck goes in goal.. football reaches endzone...
since winter games were "competitions" they arent sports either and poker is not a sport since there is no set way to win besides royal flush.... but poker is not gambling since it is not a game of chance but a game of skill...

I don't play, but a group of guys here in Iraq have started playing every Sunday night. It's a huge thing with the WPT signing on as a sponsor. They've even been featured in BLUF Magazine. Last Sunday night they had 103 soldiers/civilians play.
I'm working on renovating the website now.
